Sourav Ganguly is back and India have a new vice-captain

Sourav Ganguly is back in the Indian test squad after last featuring in it during India's tour of Pakistan. He made 34 and 37 as India crashed to defeat at Karachi.

India's last test series ended in victory in the Caribbean after 35 years. The one-day side has been taking a battering.

In a major vote of no-confidence in Virender Sehwag's leadership (and his batting too, perhaps), VVS Laxman has been named vice-captain. Sehwag did captain India to a huge win against Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad.

Gautam Gambhir and VRV Singh were the other two names included in the test squad. Yuvraj Singh (injured), Mohammad Kaif, Ramesh Powar and Suresh Raina are the omissions from India's test squad in the West Indies.

The squad: Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Munaf Patel, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, VRV Singh, Irfan Pathan, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh.

Wonder why Powar was dropped. Will he be the new scapegoat? The tourist as it were... And I have always wondered how smart it is to name a team for the next set of games when one isn't over. In an already underperforming scenario now, Kaif, Sehwag and Raina will have reason NOT to perform even more. And Ganguly... all I can say is, let the controversies begin (or get thicker, really!)

scribbler: Powar was dropped since it would have been very tough to justify picking _three_ spinners for a tour of South Africa, assuming that Kumble and Harbhajan are better bowlers than him. I don't see why Kaif, Raina and Sehwag have reasons to not perform. They need to perform to be brought back, unless the team's performance slides even more downhill from now. As for Ganguly, I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Sourav meets Greg for the first time after touching down in South Africa! I suppose Greg would paraphrase Sir Henry Morton Stanley and say "Sourav Ganguly, I presume?"!

India are replacing present proven failures like Raina and Kaif with past proven failures like Ganguly. The end result will be nothing but a failure. It would have been better if players like Badrinath or someone new was given a chance. India are breeding failure by selecting Ganguly here.

And Sachin needs to be dropped too from the test team. In his past 20 tests, he has 1 century (248 not out v Ban). Living on past reputation.

The bit that worries me more is that _if_ Dravid is unfit to play in a test, then VVS will captain!

arpit: You're wrong. Tendulkar has scored 2 centuries in his last 20 tests, the other was when he got to his 35th 100.

If Dravid is unfit, will this be the first Test he's missed since debut? I can't see anyone breaking that record.

    Hacing said that, Gilchrist might.

By Blogger Geoff (1 Dec 2006, 5:49:00 pm)

Gilly is on track. He's played 86 consecutive tests. Dravid was probably on track for 100 consecutive tests, like I woofed about a couple of months before he missed the final India v Sri Lanka test!

But I doubt if Gilly will get to 94. He can get to 90 by the end of the series. After that, Australia don't play a test until at least June when they tour Zimbabwe. Even if there are tests, I don't think Gilly will tour. They'll probably pick Haddin and give Gilly a break. Then there's a one-day series in India. End of the year , Sri Lanka play tests. So it could be a year later. That's why I think Gilchrist may hang up his test kit.

Ah, I'd forgotten that Dravid had already missed that Test. There aren't any other players on that list who are (a) playing currently and (b) currently have played consecutively since debut.
