England announce squad to tour Pakistan

England have picked a 36 year old spinner, Shaun Udal, to partner 32 year old Ashley Giles in the test side which tours Pakistan for a test and one-day series starting in October.

I assume this could mean that Vaughan's and Hoggard's pre-Ashes banter on Australia being an ageing side could rebound on England.

Darren Gough has been left out, apparently on his own request. Gough explained his reasons for not touring thus:
"I have played a lot of cricket over the last 12 months and I feel that a rest would be beneficial for me at this stage of my career. I have toured regularly with England over the past ten years and this decision will also give me an opportunity to spend more time with my children."

That is positively funny. He hasn't played a test match for two years now and fifteen one-dayers so far this year. Would his decision have anything to do with his lack of performance this summer, averaging 42 with the ball and leaking 5.7 runs an over?

Maybe he just wants to chill at home in nice English weather while his teammates sweat it out in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi. Maybe he doesn't fancy bowling to Afridi, Inzamam, Youhana Mohd. Yousuf and Razzaq. Maybe he's afraid of the terrorism, that he would be targetted for being a fast bowler from Yorkshire whose first name began with the alphabet 'D'.

I didn't realise the qualifier 'all forms of' was needed when saying he's played a lot of cricket. He's played country cricket, a few benefit matches no doubt, and has just come through a gruelling couple of weeks of book cricket.

Thanks Geoff, you're very helpful. Indeed, he has definitely been playing book cricket with a few other chaps like Graham Thorpe, Lucy Pearson, Phil DeFreitas, Venkatesh Prasad, Nayan Mongia, Ridley Jacobs, Mark Richardson and Allan Donald.

Must have got very tiring. But if he was really tonked around by them, that is a sad reflection on his current abilities. Aside from Thorpe, none of the others demolish attacks, and half of them are bowlers!
