Michael Vaughan cranks up the Ashes sledgometer

England's captain, afflicted by a severe case of foot-firmly-in-the-mouth syndrome, has declared that Australia are the ones under tremendous pressure to win the Ashes. Interestingly enough, Vaughan said " There's certainly only one team under maximum pressure and that's them.", a phrase which doesnt seem too far away from Bill Woodfull's famous "There are two teams out there, and one is playing cricket" quote to Plum Warner while nursing his wounds in the Adelaide Oval dressing room.

Perhaps he hopes that merely invoking Bodyline memories would ensure England's victory.

He is excited about the fact that he heads a young team while Australia's is ageing. On the face of it, it certainly seems true. However, England are also ageing. I suppose everyone is, anyway! Ashley Giles, Graham Thorpe and Mark Butcher are all definitely 30+ with Thorpe on the verge of retirement. The Australian side which whipped England on their last visit in 2001 was ageing too, considering that the likes of Steve & Mark Waugh, McGrath, Warne, Fleming and Slater were part of the side. Add in Colin Miller and the average age would have gone up by 5 years! We know what the result was.

I'm fairly sure Ponting's response would be what Rhett Butler tells Scarlett O'Hara: "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn".
