England announce Riverside and NatWest Series squads
The English media, while eagerly awaiting the announcement of the squad for the second test at Riverside as well as for the NatWest Series involving Australia & Bangladesh
, seems to be concerned about the make-up of the one-day unit
as well as skipper Vaughan's batting in one-dayers
. He averages a quite pathetic 28.5
and he hasn't scored a one-day century so far
. In fact his highest score of 90 came against the Zimbabwean schoolboy XI
As it turned out, there were no real surprises
in the squad announcements. The test squad was left unchanged
while Kevin Pietersen, whose omission from the test side
was greeted with a reaction potentially not too dissimilar from a possible announcement that Camilla Parker Bowles would be queen for life, is expectedly included in the one-day side.
But while Vaughan the one-day batsman hasn't really proved himself, there can be little doubt about his batting in test cricket, especially against Australia. Australian coach John Buchanan fears that test matches against Bangladesh will play Vaughan in to form
, just in time for the Ashes series. He also wants his boys to stop targetting induhviduals
and prefers to target the entire top order. Obviously he is asking his players to look at the big picture!
