Ashes battles, awards, Aussies, Strauss, Harmison and Thorpe the defector

So much so for the gloating by England's cricketers that the bunch which takes on Australia now is unscarred by earlier Ashes series. John Buchanan and his boys have decided to use the one-day series to do the scarring.

Glenn McGrath feels that Andrew Strauss being named cricketer of the year will have a negative impact on his batting since he'd be lulled into a false sense of security. McGrath was merely retraining his guns on one of his targets.

A biography on Steve Harmison talks about David Boon's influence at Durham. Boon was even then aware of Harmison's penchant for homesickness.

Meanwhile, Graham Thorpe, pressurized by several young batsmen, has decided to follow the maxim 'If you cant beat em, join em' and will be playing for New South Wales.

His role is expected to be like a player/coach and will be playing the role of the experienced hand to complement NSW's stock of young batsmen but conflicting signals from Sydney indicate that he will play only if required!
