Mike Marqusee on the changing face of the Indian cricket fan

Mike Marqusee who has written several books on South Asia, cricket and cricket in South Asia, finds out that the cricket watcher in India has changed a lot since 1996. He bases this finding on the reaction of Indian fans during the Bangalore test against Pakistan and compares it with the way spectators at the same venue reacted after the World Cup quarter-final.

Nine years is a very long time, Mike. Nine years ago, Bangladesh were nowhere near test cricket. That they still aren't is a different matter! Zimbabwe were then a pretty handy side. Australia were not invincible. West Indies hadn't yet started rolling downhill, even though they had lost the Frank Worrell trophy. England were in chaos. Ganguly and Dravid were unheard of in international cricket.
