Jennings sacked as South Africa coach despite his claims

South Africa has a new coach. The UCB announced that Mickey Arthur would be taking over from the current coach Ray Jennings with a contract that lasts until the 2007 World Cup. Reports out of South Africa earlier this week did indicate that Mickey Arthur, dubbed a Mr. 'Nobody' was the favourite to replace Jennings. Evidently, South Africa's hunt for Aussies didn't quite materialize.

Jennings had mounted a spirited defence of his team's achievements when he was in charge and was confident of keeping the job. He pointed to South Africa's victorious tour of the West Indies, where they won the test series 2-0 and blanked the West Indies 5-0 in the one-dayers and claimed that the players had improved tremendously when he was in charge. He went as far as to challenge the board to sack him if they felt his record wasn't upto scratch.

    Evidently the board didn't care.
