    Bacher backs Boje

When the investigation by the New Delhi police resulted in the startling conclusion that a few South African cricketers, including skipper Hansie Cronje were involved in fixing games for money, this is what we heard from Dr. Ali Bacher, then the managing director of the United Cricket Board of South Africa.
South African captain Hansie Cronje is a man of enormous integrity and honesty. He and his team-mates Nicky Boje, Herschelle Gibbs and Pieter Strydom are emphatic that there is no substance to allegations that they were involved in match fixing during the One-Day International series in India. The UCBSA believes that these players have not been involved in the practice of match fixing.
What happened next is well documented in many places, including during the proceedings of the King Commission inquiry and Dr. Ali Bacher's confirmation that Hansie Cronje hadn't been truthful.
Let us say that unequivocally we are shattered. The UCB and the government have been deceived.
In the context of uncertainty about whether Nicky Boje will feature in the ICC Champions Trophy in India later this year, the same Dr. Bacher comes out and says this about Nicky Boje's involvement.
Nicky Boje was innocent. I know that for a fact. When it all broke, Herschelle Gibbs' body language was not good. Boje was fine. I can read people. He was innocent.
Indeed you can, Dr. Bacher, as has been proved earlier.

I really don't get this. If Nicky Boje and the South African authorities feel that he hasn't done anything wrong, why fear an investigation?

Maybe they're trying to let Boje down gently, rather than just drop him? 'The Delhi police are after you, Nicky, and they're notorious for getting their man. You'd better stay home. We'll call you.'

Haha. Nice way to shunt him out. But he's South Africa's best spin bowler! I still don't get why he's shying away if he is sure he's innocent.

Maybe its like that saying about two criminals; if one is innocent and one guilty then the one at rest is the guilty one. Boje could have been relaxed as he was found out.

Since when has 'reading people' equated to a fact?

Not being too critical but Ali said the same when the initial reports of Cronje's involvement in the fixing scandal broke out.

Basically Ali's just stuck his foot into his mouth yet again. Dave Richardson, coincidentally (and conveniently?) South African, says
"It is principally a problem of two individual players and they are obviously taking legal advice. But if we receive a request from the South African cricket board, we are willing to facilitate it."
If the ICC was serious about entirely cleaning up the mess caused by match fixing, they must _not_ facilitate any move to allow Gibbs and Boje to get away without being investigated by the appropriate authorities.
