Breaking/Brief news

    October 22, 2008

Dear Sydney Morning Herald. It's 2008 now, not 2004

Yesterday, the venerated 'The Sydney Morning Herald' newspaper had a report on a bunch of Aussie fans being arrested for wearing 'offensive' t-shirts. The t-shirt, which I saw on day one at Bangalore, and didn't offend me the least bit, said "Beer with Mahatma, Bets with Gupta, Dancing with Indira and still getting runs".

It quoted an Indian blogger, Samanth Subramanian, as saying
I was about to point out the sheer cultural insensitivity of his T-shirt to the burly, tattooed, almost-twice-my-height gentleman wearing it, but I was suddenly called away to inspect the peeling paint on a plastic chair.
I know Samanth from the quizzing circuit, and he worked at CricInfo when it was CricInfo and not Cricinfo. So I asked him if it was him. He did acknowledge that it was his quote.

But the only problem with Arjun Ramachandran's report was that Samanth wrote that particular line in an October 2004 post titled 'Test Match Diary: Mark Waugh and the bottles'! I guess that proves three things - the Aussie fans need to get new t-shirts, Arjun Ramachandran needs to get his facts right and 'The Sydney Morning Herald' needs to get a better reporter!

As requested by the newspaper, I have emailed them with the news that their reporter has got his facts wrong!
