    Mudhsuden Singh Panesar called up

England's latest spin discovery, or the latest to join the ranks of Chris Schofield, Ian Salisbury, Min Patel, Gareth Batty, Martyn Ball, Richard Dawson et al, depending on how you look at it, Monty Panesar has been included in England's tour party to India as the sixteenth member. Ashley Giles' availability isn't confirmed yet and so Ian Blackwell is on standby.

This is confirmation of yesterday's reports hinting at Panesar's inclusion.

I've seen a few reports suggesting that Panesar's wickets were predominantly on Northamptonshire's spin-friendly pitch. I went through his analyses during the last season. At home, he had 31 wickets at an average of 17.9 and a strike rate of 47.8 and while bowling away, he had 15 wickets at an average of 28.9 and a strike rate of 57.2. Yes, those numbers are skewed in favour of home games, but a bowling average of 29 and a strike rate less than 60 is perfectly acceptable (in my opinion) for someone who only became a regular in his county side a season or two ago. To put it in perspective, the senior left-arm spinner, for want of a better word, averages 43 at home and 36 away.
