    South Africa go 1-0 up

After drawing the first blood by winning the 20-20 international, the Kiwis were on a high coming into the 1st ODI at Bloemfontein, only to lose it by 2 wickets. Opting to bat, Fleming gave his side a bright start though he lost Astle and Vincent early. McMillan then carried on the scoring after Fleming left with the usual support from the New Zealand lower middle order. They ended with 249 on the board which looked a healthy total to defend at the half way mark. Infact, even 80% into the match, it looked like the men with the black caps would walk with the honours for the day.

As it has happened many times in this game, one man had different ideas and produced a special innings to drive his team home. Justin Kemp, who has done it before for South Africa by playing some lightning innings, did it again for them with a rapid 73 containing five fours and three sixers. Though he failed to finish the match for his country, he had done enough damage to the opposition camp by the time he left - just 3 runs needed off 6 balls which was easily hit by Boje.
