Mystery and history in Pakistan cricket, according to Bob Woolmer

Bob Woolmer took over as Pakistan's coach last year and had a huge impact on the side's performance, especially in India. Admittedly it hasn't been rosy going. He has said his share of stupid things. He has also had to counter the likes of Miandad and Akhtar.

He talks to Osman Samiuddin about Pakistan cricket, fitness issues, Shoaib and his fitness.

I am fairly sure he, and indeed the rest of the Pakistani cricket establishment, would have been worried at Shoaib's performance for the World XI.

Fascinating interview that, although to re-assure you, not a lot of people will be “worried” over Shoaib’s super series performances …we have other much more serious issues to worry over ATM, and, it’s not like much of him was expected in the first place, and on top of all that he him self doesn’t seem overtly keen to improve his chances of selection (missed training today for no apparent reason), and since we have plenty of options already with Sami, Gul, Naved-ul-Hasan, Shabbir Ahmed all fit and performing, as well as others lower down the pecking order, we don’t have much of a reason to be worried. Shoaib does.

For all outsiders Pakistan cricket has always held a sort of fascination.

So much talent, yet the team can blow hot & blow cold.

Shoaib's performance and fitness in the just concluded one day matches in Australia were lamentable.

Cricket is played 90% in the mind. It looks like unless Shoaib becomes more mentally focused, we will no longer have the pleasure of seeing one of the fastest bowlers in the Pakistan Test and One Day Side.

Zainub: That is sad isn't it. Shoaib obviously has the ability to turn a game around. If only he got his mental and physical acts together, he'd be a shoo-in. I know Pakistan did quite well in India minus Shoaib, so it is tempting to assume that the side was happier without his shenanigans. Don't be too sure about Shabbir. All he needs to do is to bowl *one* ball not in conformance with his bowling action under test conditions and he's out for a year.

Sandy: I think Shoaib's problem is paranoia. He thinks that he gets targetted for everything that goes wrong with the Pakistan side.
