Breaking/Brief news

    November 15, 2004

We have the bizarre situation of someone whose scores were 26, 30, 58, 39, 23, 9, 35 and 24 conjecturing if Katich was dropped for not converting his starts into big scores. To put things in perspective, Katich's scores were 81, 39, 36, 9, 4, 99, 7 and 1. If we define a start as being anything over 20 runs and a big score as being anything more than 50 [admittedly a big score is a century, but since neither of them scored a century, we'll use 50], Hayden had 6 unconverted starts out of 7 innings when he went past 20, i.e. 86% of the time. In contrast, Katich had 2 unconverted starts out of 4 innings, i.e. 50% of the time. You tell me. If consistency was what Hayden meant, he certainly has a point. Not conversion.
