Breaking/Brief news

Brilliant England [& Gloucs] wicket-keeper Jack Russell retired from cricket due to a persistent back injury. Russell was consistently ignored by the selectors for much of the 1990s when he was clearly the superior keeper and Alec Stewart, the better batsman was preferred. Russell did have his days under the sun as a batsman, notably an unbeaten 29 in 277 minutes providing brilliant support to Atherton as he went about his epic 185 at Johannesburg in 1995-96 and 124 made coming in at 107/5 against India at Lord's in 1996. In the same Johannesburg test, Russell set a record for the most dismissals in a match by a keeper.
