Breaking/Brief news

    June 09, 2004

Michael Slater, the former Australian opening batsman, announced his retirement today. Slater has been battling a form of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis and that really meant there was no way he could continue playing cricket. Slater, the batsman, was very enjoyable to watch, even if he was playing India. He was extremely aggressive in his batting approach and infuriatingly inconsistent, something that came as part and parcel of the way he batted. Slater was for most of the 1990s what Sehwag is today - an opening batsman who thrills the spectators, his teammates and the opposition. The way he enjoyed his centuries (with 9 scores in the 90s, he could have had 23 centuries!) was a treat to watch, the broad grin on his face and kissing the coat of arms on his helmet. However, the verbal fracas with Dravid at Bombay in 2001 definitely blotted his copybook, which in any case couldn't have been too clean given he was Australian. Bye bye Slats, cricket will miss you.
