Breaking/Brief news

    May 19, 2004

Last week, Zimbabwe batsman Dion Ebrahim had cast aspersions on Murali's bowling action by (possibly jocularly) mentioning in a tv interview that the surprise legbreak he received from Murali was the first legal delivery which was 'bowled'. True to its nature, when it comes to statements made by players, the ICC moved in swiftly and promptly read out the rule book to Dion and banned him for a match. Having played 22 tests, Ebrahim was the seniormost of Zimbabwe's bunch of cricketers who played against Sri Lanka. By banning him for a test, the first test against Australia if the tour went ahead, the ICC have further depleted Zimbabwe's rapidly reducing cricketing resources and thus contributed to devaluing any cricket played by Zimbabwe. Sadly though, the ICC cannot act against self-styled cricket crazy politicians who're bent on interfering in cricketing matters or former players-turned-commentators and columnists.
