Breaking/Brief news

    May 13, 2004

Ganguly backs a two-tiered test championship. He must remember that not too long ago, India were #7 in the rankings.

A day after Alf Valentine dies, Lance Gibbs, the great West Indian offspinner talks to BBC Sport about him.

Does Andrew Miller think Graeme Hick should be recalled? Naah, far from it. This is yet another analysis of what may have been if Hick had managed himself properly and if England had managed him properly. In my opinion, clearly he had the talent. Yes, he couldn't place the West Indies bowlers, especially Ambrose. But how many other batsmen could? England should have given him more opportunities. The most number of Tests he played in a row was 15 (and that happened twice) over a 65 Test career. Graeme Hick was surely a far better fellows like John Crawley, Matthew Maynard, Chris Adams & Darren Maddy who got picked instead of him during the 1990s. He did average 43 against South Africa and 35 against Australia & India, so he obviously wasn't a mug with the bat. Hick could play spin quite well. I still remember the century he scored at Bombay in 1992/3 when he came in with England in more than a spot of trouble and got 178. He's been a superb fielder and a more than useful offspin bowler.

Headley, Holding, Walsh, Rowe and Dujon have been named as Jamaica's 5 best cricketers of all-time in the Scotiabank West Indian Cricket Jubilee celebrations.
