    Gillespie for Yorkshire

Jason Gillespie, cast away after a horrible tour of England, will make his English county championship debut for Yorkshire. While I still think Gillespie has it in him to come back into the side, especially given the way his replacements have performed of late, it is baffling to see how England's county sides keep picking unknown Australians or Australians trying to make a comeback ... or Australians with no chance of national selection.

Travis Birt for Derbyshire, Andrew Bichel & Mitchell Johnson for Essex, Dominic Thornely for Hampshire, Cameron White and Dan Cullen go to Somerset and Mathew Nicholson for Northamptonshire.

Bichel and Nicholson are actually antiques. While Mike Atherton is spot on when he talks about the 'old' enemy, I am baffled about why English counties continue to rely so heavily on Australian cricketers. Surely there is enough talent in England. Unless of course, there is a gentleman's agreement about how England's counties will hire Australia's young [and old] cricketers, nurture them into superb batsmen & bowlers and in return, Australia will underperform in the Ashes.
