MCG opposes Cricket Australia-Nine deal, Reiffel gets promoted

Cricket Australia and Kerry Packer's Nine Network have announced a fresh seven year deal which rolls back the older policy of not telecasting live games in a city where an international game was being played. So the Melbourne Cricket Ground authorities are up in arms against this, claiming that this would affect their revenue stream.

Things haven't been great for the MCG of late. First, they came close to losing a Boxing Day test. Then it was decided that the ground would not host next year's tri-series final.

Meanwhile, Paul Reiffel, who retired immediately after the 1999 World Cup, has been named in Australia's national panel of umpires. My guess is that this means he will umpire in one-day internationals. Lest we forget, Reiffel did his level best to let South Africa win that amazing semi-final. This is what the Cricinfo commentary said:

44.1 Warne to Kallis, three runs, misplaying the drive, chipped into the air, Reiffel races and misses the catch from long off, they get 3 after Reiffel loses the gamble

48.5 McGrath to Klusener, SIX, pulled down the ground, Reiffel is underneath it, DROPPED, at long on, and fends it over for the 6 very difficult chance, running backwards and taking it over his head, wouldn't have been a 6 if he didn't go for it have I said "what drama" yet?
