Breaking/Brief news

The ICC confirmed that umpires would be wired up to the TV stump microphones and third umpires could call no-balls as the experiment with increased usage of technology continues during the ICC Champions Trophy. I am all for using technology, but please let us use it sensibly.

From my limited experience of sitting in the press box a few times, there is a delay of at least 1 second between the action occuring on the field and the TV channel telecasting it. By my calculations, a batsman has just over half a second to respond to a ball bowled to him at 140 km/hr. This implies that when the batsman plays the shot, the TV umpire hasn't even seen the ball being delivered. What is the point of the third umpire relaying a no-ball call to the on-field umpire when the batsman is possibly already out? What if the batsman tries to steal a quick single and after he takes off for the run, the third umpire informs the on-field umpire that it was a no-ball and a fielder throws the stumps down? Isn't the batsman out for no fault of his?

The other alternative would be to allow a free hit off the ball following one which was signalled a no-ball. This is already in place in a few domestic one-day tournaments and it would resolve problems such as the one I mentioned above. Prudent use of technology never killed anyone, did it?
