    Fifty for Ganguly

Desperate to make the headlines for the right reasons, in contrast with being banned from bowling yesterday during Bengal's Ranji Trophy game against Tamil Nadu, Sourav Ganguly at last managed to make some runs, making a half-century at a reasonably good pace in a low-scoring game.

Tamil Nadu are in a good position though, because after scoring only 218, they skittled out Bengal for 145 and were nearly 200 runs ahead with seven second innings wickets in hand. Ganguly would do his team, himself and his fans a lot of good if he did something of note with the bat in the second innings. All those wickets count for little if he doesn't bat well, because this time around, he hasn't been picked as an all-rounder.

I'm torn between hoping that Ganguly bats well in the second innings and Tamil Nadu wins a crucial game. I guess the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. So I'll just borrow a phrase from Cardus, made in the context of Victor Trumper, and hope that Sourav Ganguly scores a century for Bengal in Tamil Nadu's win.
