Lancashire v Yorkshire: The battles continue

In the 15th century, the House of Lancaster and the House of York fought wars over the throne of England. These wars were referred to as the Wars of the Roses after the badges worn by the royalty of the two houses.

Soon, as cricket became more and more popular in England and a domestic league system became entrenched, this rivalry spilled over into the game and matches between the Yorkshire and Lancashire were referred to as the "Battle of the Roses" or just simply "The Roses game".

The County Championship game between these two teams which commenced yesterday is the 50th time these teams are meeting in the championship. Hence there is obviously a lot more publicity associated with this particular match. Several prominent players like Stuart Law, Brad Hodge, James Anderson, Dominic Cork, Sajid Mahmood (for Lancs), Matthew Hoggard, Ian Harvey and Craig White (for Yorks) are playing in the game.
