Breaking/Brief news

    December 23, 2004

India were tested by Bangladesh in the first one-dayer at Chittagong. Bangladesh ended up losing the game by 11 runs, matching their lowest losing margin so far in one-dayers. Some frenetic late hitting by the two Khaleds, Mashud and Mahmud, ensured that the margin was as low as possible. The game never really seemed out of India's hands but Ganguly gave Bangladesh a glimmer of hope by not bowling out his main bowlers. Sridharan Sriram made up for his failure earlier with the bat and picked up three wickets although I get this feeling his action will come in for scrutiny soon.

Earlier, Bangladesh sent India in and got Ganguly in the very first over. Tendulkar and Yuvraj followed soon. Dravid and Kaif stemmed the rot with a century partnership before Dravid, the recalled Sriram and debutant wicket-keeper Dhoni, got out in quick succession, Dhoni for a first ball duck. Agarkar and Kaif combined for a few overs to raise the runrate. Pathan struck some meaty blows while Joginder chipped in with a four off the first ball he faced to help India get to 245, a total which was always going to be enough.
