Breaking/Brief news

    December 29, 2004

England came back spectacularly in the Durban test on the back of a superb opening stand of 273 between Trescothick and Strauss, who just seems to be unable to strike a discordant note (pun intended!). They ended up with a lead of 88 runs with two more days of play left. The pitch, in total contrast to the first day, seems a dream batting wicket, so if South Africa are to be put under some sort of pressure, a target of around 350 in a little more than a day will make the game very interesting. But for that, England will need to score 260 odd runs in five hours.

BBC Sport compares England's openers with the other great opening partnerships in English and world cricket history.
