Breaking/Brief news

    December 10, 2004

As predicted in these columns after the Calcutta test, Anil Kumble got the wicket of a classy Bangladesh batsman, tailender and left-arm spinner [well pseudo-allrounder considering he also averages 21 with the bat] Mohammad Rafique, to go past Kapil Dev's tally of 434 test wickets.

Bangladesh got off to their customary start, with Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan bundling out the top order before 15 overs were up. At 50/5 they were in real danger of being bowled out before 75 but some good lower order batting helped them compile 184 thanks mainly to Mohd. Ashraful's patient fifty and Mohd. Rafique's biffs filled 47. Pathan took the first 5-fer of his fledgling career and its a fair bet that this will be his easiest five-fer, even if he plays for another 15 years. Incidentally Bangladesh scored their runs at over 3 an over, which is very unlike their normal scoring rate.
