Breaking/Brief news

    September 22, 2004

Just as the Indian team reinforced its new mantra of not even reaching tournament finals so that it can never be accused of being chokers, the BCCI is doing its bit to preserve India's 35 year old unbeaten home tests record against Australia by ensuring that the series does not even get underway.

I really wonder why the BCCI woke up so late in the day [last month] and realized that the TV rights given to Prasar Bharati/Doordarshan were expiring soon. If they were even half as professional as you expect a sporting body to be, they should have done this last year. Now, Zee Networks has gone to court claiming that the BCCI cannot cancel the rights given to them. ESPN-Star will like this situation since it means that now they at least have a chance of winning the deal. As was mentioned in these pages a month ago, this seems a great way to have nice greasy palms.
