Breaking/Brief news

    September 23, 2004

First it was just Gibbs and Boje not touring India later this year. Now the South African Cricket Board is reportedly considering calling off the Test series.

Its time the BCCI called the South African board's bluff. The ICC Future Tours Programme Agreement explicitly states that touring teams will be expected to fulfill their obligations or face a minimum $US2 million dollar penalty and possible suspension from international cricket. While the decision by the ICC was in the context of England's unwillingness to tour Zimbabwe, the South African board's stand is effectively meant to stop an investigation into alleged match-fixing. The ICC focusses on Azhar's commentary at the Asia Cup on the grounds that he has been banned for match-fixing and tries to get the BCCI to ensure that he isnt allowed to do his job. So surely they ought to step in and tell South Africa that the tour must go on and if Boje/Gibbs/any other player need to be questioned by the Indian investigating agencies in relation to the match-fixing issue which broke out during South Africa's last tour of India, the SA board must not interfere.
