Breaking/Brief news

    June 01, 2004

South Africa's tour to India later this year is already making the headlines. The UCB wanted a guarantee from the BCCI that no inquiry/action would be taken against Nicky Boje and Herschelle Gibbs who were implicated in the match-fixing scandal, which broke out in April 2000 during South Africa's last tour here. The case has still not been closed, so the Delhi police can ask for Boje and Gibbs to be interrogated. To add to the confusion, BCCI president Dalmiya said the board has no locus standi on the issue and that it was upto the government and law agencies to take the decisions. This apparently contradicts an earlier quote by a BCCI spokesperson that the UCB had been informed that there would be no action from the Indian police. Now, it appears, there is a realistic chance that Gibbs and Boje may not be included in the squad, to avoid any situation which could arise.
