Breaking/Brief news

    June 06, 2004

BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya historically announced yesterday that umpires must call bowlers who chuck instead of reporting the incident to the match referee. This is a complete U turn from what he did as the ICC chief when Shoaib Akhtar was reported for chucking in Australia which would have meant him being banned from international cricket until his action was reviewed and okayed by a panel.

Dalmiya changed the law (or well its interpretation), under pressure from the PCB no doubt, to ensure that Shoaib played in the Carlton United one-day series in Australia in 1999/2000. Apparently since the umpires had only reported Shoaib's bouncer as being a problem delivery and since bouncers were anyway not allowed in one-dayers, Shoaib was allowed to play. Subsequently a multi-stage bowling action review process was put in place, which increased the bureaucracy and took the umpires out of the equation almost altogether. The media release of the ICC to explain the decision taken then was a classical attempt to insult our intelligence.

What is the reason for this volte-face? We will never know until cricket reaches some sort of mini-crisis again and India's vote comes in handy ...
