Tomorrow is my 30th birthday. It is not going to be quite as happy an occasion as I would have hoped, given the horrible 4-0 scoreline in the Ashes series, but it should be an enjoyable occasion nonetheless. The ECB has booked a restaurant for all of us down by the harbour in Sydney, where we’ll have a very nice meal and then enjoy the New Year fireworks on the Harbour Bridge. It was good of the Sydney authorities to arrange a spectacular firework display in honour of my birthday.Second, Mike Gatting gets asked in the same newspaper about barracking from 'The Hill' at the Sydney Cricket Ground:
Did you ever get stick from the Hill?
The worst I got in Sydney was from one of my own team. At the Bicentenary Test in 1988, the Australia batsmen were complaining about Bill Athey’s shadow at short leg encroaching on the pitch and Graham Dilley told them: "That’s nothing to worry about. If we move Gatt in close, you’ll want to go off for bad light."
