India announce squad for first two one-dayers against Pakistan

Three months ago, Laxman and Kumble were left out of a one-day side against Bangladesh. It now seems likely that their one-day international careers are over after they were left out for the first two one-dayers against Pakistan. Gambhir and wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik have been dropped while Mohammad Kaif, Dinesh Mongia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Murali Kartik have been included.

I wish the selectors at least told Kumble and Laxman plainly that they would not be considered for one-dayers and cite the reasons why. It either gives the players the opportunity to rectify the faults or to not have any hopes of being picked for that form of the game again. I am in favour of Kumble not playing any more one-dayers because we definitely need him more in the test arena. As for Laxman, I still think he has the ability to perform in one-dayers. My gut feeling is that he needs to reinvent himself in the one-day game, just as Dravid did 4-5 years ago. Obviously he cannot keep, but why not try his hand at bowling? Perhaps we need to rotate the batsmen around too.
