Breaking/Brief news

    December 21, 2004

Andrew Hall was reprimanded for gesturing towards the pavillion after dismissing Vaughan in England's first innings. There was no monetary fine. In contrast, just a week ago, Shoaib Akhtar was fined 40% of his match fee for a similar offence.

Match referee Madugalle apparently went by Shoaib's past record and announced the fine. In 2003, Akhtar was banned for ball-tampering and using offensive language. So I suppose that past record was indeed considered. However, Andrew Hall was banned for a one-dayer and two tests in 2003 as well. So why wasnt his past record considered?

In any case, I find the very concept of a player being judged and punished twice (or more) for the same offence totally contrary to the principles of natural justice. Irfan Pathan could find 15 years later (hopefully) that the fine he copped for mocking Martyn during the VB Series earlier this year counts against him if he is found guilty of something under the ICC's code of conduct (hopefully not!).
