Breaking/Brief news

    September 16, 2004

Among the recipients of the Arjuna awards announced yesterday is Harbhajan Singh. Congrats to him. But I must question the basis of him getting the award. In 2003, his bowling average in one-dayers was just that - average. His Test bowling average last year was really ridiculous. In the World Cup, his performance was nothing spectacular, his bowling in the final after the horse had bolted being the only real highlight.

His supporters may turn around and say that he was injured which is why he hardly ever played Tests last year and by the time the tests against New Zealand started, most of the one-day cricket had already been played. So I turn the argument around. If he really didnt play much and his performance was hardly outstanding, why has he been given an award? Surely it'd have made more sense to give him an award based on his 2001 performances rather than 2003!
